I thankfully do NOT have to report in for Jury Duty tomorrow...PHEW. The Guy told me he was taking Mermaid in with him to work tomorrow, which meant I would have Tall Boy with me all day. I think I'm going to have to ask my neighbor if she can take the kids if/when I do get called in later in the week. Crap. I really hope I'm not called in at the end of the week. That would suck majorly. My mother is coming in for a short visit starting next Tuesday, and Mermaid starts her schooling up again on Monday.

I'm not sure what to do if I end up having to report next week.

You should be able to get excused if you have to watch your kids.

Yeah, I'll have to call them tomorrow before I *must* report in.

This is actually a postponed date, too. I chose a school vacation so that it wouldn't interfere with Mermaid's schooling, but...I might have to postpone it again. Argh.

The last time I had jury duty, I went in on the first day, and luckily all the jurors for the case were picked before my turn came up.

They're very particular about excusing people. But I can prove I'm responsible for Mermaid from 8 to 5 on the weekdays when school starts. Means I might have to go in and prove it, though.

YAY for no jury duty!

So, since Friday is a holiday, can they call us one day next week?

Which court do you have to report to?

From what I understand, the paper I have states that "you are placed on call for no more than five days and can be asked to report for jury service on one of those days."

I'm not 100% sure that means we'll have to call in on Monday because of the Friday holiday.

I'm going to call in today and talk to a person there about it. I really do have responsibility for Mermaid all day for school hours starting next week (and isn't she not thrilled) so, we'll see. It would not be good if, say, I got chosen for a jury on Monday, and had to go for the rest of the week.

Oh, and I have to report into Burbank Courthouse.

I don't know how Orange county works, but I just found out that the five days counts Monday through Friday. At least in LA County, Thursday is the final day of jury duty for this week because of New Years Eve Day Friday.

Call the number on your summons: they'll be able to give a definitive answer. :-)

YAY!

I'm in LA County, too. I'm assigned to Norwalk this time. So, is my daughter. Same week. Different group.

The hard part is that two days this week, she has to work until 2:30 AM and I've got the plant shut-down. I guess there just is no good time, eh?

Congratulations on not having to report. A month ago I was in the jury pool and had to report on Nov. 30 (and I was picked so I also served on Dec. 1). How long are you in the pool? Around here the period is a month when you are liable to be called. I know your service period could be different, but if it is the same there you could be done and not have to worry about later in the week, which is a new month. Jury duty is interesting, but really, all things being equal I'd rather not have to sit in a jury again

In LA County, every other year (I think) your name can be pulled out of the pool of registered voters or DMV license holders.

You have to check in for one week. If you're called in, and you don't get picked for a jury, you can go home and your service is over. If you DO get chosen for a jury, you usually only have to serve for a week. If it's for more than a week, then you can see if you can get out of it; but I have a feeling if you get chosen for a celebrity trial, many of the jurors would like to be in on it. I have no idea about murder cases.

I worked with someone in MA in the late 80/90s who was chosen for a murder case and was out for two weeks or so. Maybe three weeks. Brr. I wouldn't have wanted to serve on that jury.

Weirdly, I don't think my husband's name has ever come up on the jury pool list, and we've both lived here the same amount of time.

Oh, and I have to call in tonight, and Weds night. The guy I spoke to on the phone said that court activity was light this week (which is a reason I chose this week, in the theory) and even if I do get called in, the likelyhood of having to serve would be small. We'll see!

Around here you are in the pool to report for a month (chosen from the registered voter rolls--if it were the DMV I'd never be called since I don't drive).

If you are summoned but aren't chosen or your case is dismissed before you report (you call the night before), you are still in the pool till the month ends. With my summons this year, once I was past Thanksgiving I thought I would slip by without being called, especially since the last day of the month was the Monday after Thanksgiving. But they did issue the summons and had a trial that day--it was a burglary case, thankfully, just two days. But now my name is out of the pool for a full two years.

Good luck when you do have to call. My niece, who is a lawyer, said they hate trying cases at this time of year and often ask for continuances.
