And how long will it be, I wonder, for Michael Shanks fans to start claiming that he's going to "raise the game" of the actors on Supernatural?

Michael Shanks' Fans? Please don't go down that asinine road. It just makes you look like jerks and completely ridiculous. Don't go there. If you do, you are total asshats.

I...didn't even consider that angle. Wow, I would be so pissed if I hear any of that. The actors on that show are top notch.

There was some insistence that Mr Shanks, who I admit was darned good as Victor on Burn Notice, "raised their game" on that show. Excuse me? Raise the game on *someone else's show*? I think not.

Oh-and the same thing goes for Smallville, although I don't watch that show. To claim that a guest actor consistently "raises the game" of actors who are own their own show takes a lot of chutzpah. It infers that other actors are all lazy schmoes, when that's furthest from the truth.

It was only RDA that was sitting on his lazy acting rear on SG-1.

I think I heard that going around about Burn Notice, though I don't watch that show.

However, I do watch SV. I will admit that SV doesn't have the best stories and the acting isn't something that knocks you out of the park, but on most days SG-1 wasn't much different. They are fun shows, you know? Decent stories, decent acting, and lots of fun.

But to say a guest raises their game? I dunno. That bugs me. Most actors on any show work hard. Some get lazy - and we saw that for ourselves - but most people treat their jobs with professionalism. I didn't know people were saying that about SV >:(

I'm biased, of course, but if anyone says that about SPN I will be even more floored, considering how I feel the writing and acting, while not perfect, is some of the best I watch on TV right now.

I haven't seen anyone say it *yet*. I hope that silliness died with Burn Notice. Yes, even MS got lazy (as did *everyone* else) on SG-1 for a few seasons there.

I don't see how a guest star could ever "raise the game" for the core cast. He just wouldn't be there long enough, you know?

I thought MS did a great job of fitting in seamlessly with BN, but I think the core cast was always pretty damn good, even when they had a guest star of lesser quality.

Some people are just obsessed with how absolutely perfect they think MS is. I do like his acting quite a lot, but c'mon.

Who said that?

It's a spiffy guest appearance. He's lucky to get it, but then he resides in the hub of Science Fiction TV shows and made for TV movies, plus he has made a career out of it, I guess his luck wouldn't be that bad. I still think he's lucky. Not all actors can get gigs that aren't similar to what they had been playing for 10+ years.

By and large, though, I think the writing on SPN is probably better than a lot of the writing on SG-1. I've gone to SPN during my own recovery from the crap on Heroes. It's nice to see that some plots actually stick. Had Dean gone to Hell on Heroes a season ago, they wouldn't be talking about it now. I'm watching 4th season of SPN, so it's coming up A LOT. Like one of the key components of the season.

I love Shanks as much as anyone, but I don't think it's possible for him to raise their game over there. The level of acting that we get from the leads (and some of the guest stars, though some are really not that good, like generic Bad Actress Lady that played the Kelownan bitch on SG1) is consistently better than what we got from the leads on SG1 for the last 3-4 years it was on.

Must be a rumor I heard somewhere.... *g*

Talking about Burn notice, I really don't think it's possible for a guest star to raise the level of acting there because they're so freaking good on that show. I will say that Victor was a good temporary match and adversary for Michael because both were very active, snarky, burned, Carla-hating characters who were extraordinarily good spies. Working together, they could kick a lot of proverbial butt but they got rid of Victor a wee bit too soon to let them kick the proverbial butt.

INFIDEL!!!!

You must embrace the insanity that is SPN. :-) I just fear they're going to kill his character off. It would be nice to see him get a few recurring roles here and there.

Unfortunately, once the casting directors hear you give good character death, you're totally typecast.

Though, there is that upcoming maybe solo Hawkman movie. :-)

Poor Shanks. I know he's happy to be working, but *damn* it would be nice if he got some somewhat meatier roles.

[resists urge to act 13 about that last sentence, which is extremely difficult even when I haven't already taken my nightly meds]

Right now, most actors are pretty damn happy to get any job. Unless you're a "name" actor, and you get too many. Spread the wealth, literally.

*snort*

I've seen that he's apparently shooting himself in the foot for taking a paying gig on SPN (don't ask me how - haven't figured that part out), but not that he can out-act the whole cast ... yet. Of course, I've got a tiny flist. Chances are good I'll not see a thing.

From: [identity profile] gategrrl.livejournal.com
Probably you won't see a thing. ;-)

Er...how can being on a hit show on a smaller network that gets a fair amount of press be *bad*, I ask you? Where is the logic in that? It's paying...should he volunteer his time? He does need to work and has a family to support.

The nearest I can figure the logic is this: I don't like this show and think it's horrible, therefore it truly is a horrible show and this is Bad for Shanks because now he will be tainted by this five minute guest spot on such a horrible show.

Bwha?

Perhaps they're still stuck on the idea that he should be a leading actor in movies and shouldn't waste time with TV shows? Have they not noticed the massive number of movie actors now "slumming" in TV series because they want a regular paycheck?

I think it's more that they don't like SPN (all the amoral killing (as opposed to all the amoral crap that goes on in shows like 24 or Burn Notice - that is no problem) and apparently a severe dislike for JP), therefore it must certainly be bad for Shanks's career. Yeah, I don't get it, either.

The logic did make my head hurt even more.

I always felt Supernatural had the underpinnings of a morality play, so amoral stuff is just part of the deal, just like in most shows. But at least the boys tend to at least try to be on the side of good. Well, until the side of good turns out to be not so good anyway.

Don't try to follow their logic. A winding, twisted path you'll find, and you'll possibly be followed around by a troll.

Yeah, exactly. I guess some people view it as indiscriminate bloodshed, which I boggle at, myself. It might have gotten worse for a bit there, but hello - apocalypse. Lucifer wiping out an entire town is not an act condoned by the good guys.

I still find it rich that this guest spot is such a huge mistake, where his spot on 24 or Burn Notice (both shows based somewhat more in reality than SPN, and with plenty of immoral killing) were not The End of the World for Shanks's Career.

I came to LJ Land to get away from those sort of shenanigans.

I'm just glad that when some of the worst offenders checked out LJ, they didn't like it (probably because they can't control what you post in your own damn LJ), and left. Buh-bye, don't let the doorknob hit you in the ass on the way out. Or let it. Whatever.

What? Shanks is gonna be on SUPERNATURAL?! OMG YAY!!! :D

No, I think he was great on Stargate SG-1 but I really like the actors on SPN. :D
Not that it's the best show ever, you know? It's just that I kinda like it anyway, it's like my guilty pleasure cause it really sucks with female characters and don't get me started on gays or non-white people... :(

But anyway, I kinda like Padalecki and Ackles, I think they've grown over the years and that they're starting to show some actual talent, afaic, and nt just good looks. :)

Just my two cents...
