Shanks on SPN? Will he Raise Their Game?
Jan. 20th, 2010 09:31 amAnd how long will it be, I wonder, for Michael Shanks fans to start claiming that he's going to "raise the game" of the actors on Supernatural?
Michael Shanks' Fans? Please don't go down that asinine road. It just makes you look like jerks and completely ridiculous. Don't go there. If you do, you are total asshats.

Date: 2010-01-20 05:41 pm (UTC)Oh-and the same thing goes for Smallville, although I don't watch that show. To claim that a guest actor consistently "raises the game" of actors who are own their own show takes a lot of chutzpah. It infers that other actors are all lazy schmoes, when that's furthest from the truth.
It was only RDA that was sitting on his lazy acting rear on SG-1.

Date: 2010-01-20 05:47 pm (UTC)However, I do watch SV. I will admit that SV doesn't have the best stories and the acting isn't something that knocks you out of the park, but on most days SG-1 wasn't much different. They are fun shows, you know? Decent stories, decent acting, and lots of fun.
But to say a guest raises their game? I dunno. That bugs me. Most actors on any show work hard. Some get lazy - and we saw that for ourselves - but most people treat their jobs with professionalism. I didn't know people were saying that about SV >:(
I'm biased, of course, but if anyone says that about SPN I will be even more floored, considering how I feel the writing and acting, while not perfect, is some of the best I watch on TV right now.

Date: 2010-01-20 06:09 pm (UTC)It's a spiffy guest appearance. He's lucky to get it, but then he resides in the hub of Science Fiction TV shows and made for TV movies, plus he has made a career out of it, I guess his luck wouldn't be that bad. I still think he's lucky. Not all actors can get gigs that aren't similar to what they had been playing for 10+ years.
By and large, though, I think the writing on SPN is probably better than a lot of the writing on SG-1. I've gone to SPN during my own recovery from the crap on Heroes. It's nice to see that some plots actually stick. Had Dean gone to Hell on Heroes a season ago, they wouldn't be talking about it now. I'm watching 4th season of SPN, so it's coming up A LOT. Like one of the key components of the season.

Talking about Burn notice, I really don't think it's possible for a guest star to raise the level of acting there because they're so freaking good on that show. I will say that Victor was a good temporary match and adversary for Michael because both were very active, snarky, burned, Carla-hating characters who were extraordinarily good spies. Working together, they could kick a lot of proverbial butt but they got rid of Victor a wee bit too soon to let them kick the proverbial butt.

You must embrace the insanity that is SPN. :-) I just fear they're going to kill his character off. It would be nice to see him get a few recurring roles here and there.

Date: 2010-01-21 02:04 am (UTC)I've seen that he's apparently shooting himself in the foot for taking a paying gig on SPN (don't ask me how - haven't figured that part out), but not that he can out-act the whole cast ... yet. Of course, I've got a tiny flist. Chances are good I'll not see a thing.

Date: 2010-01-21 04:09 am (UTC)I'm just glad that when some of the worst offenders checked out LJ, they didn't like it (probably because they can't control what you post in your own damn LJ), and left. Buh-bye, don't let the doorknob hit you in the ass on the way out. Or let it. Whatever.

Poor Shanks. I know he's happy to be working, but *damn* it would be nice if he got some somewhat meatier roles.

Date: 2010-01-21 04:38 am (UTC)Er...how can being on a hit show on a smaller network that gets a fair amount of press be *bad*, I ask you? Where is the logic in that? It's paying...should he volunteer his time? He does need to work and has a family to support.

Date: 2010-01-21 05:06 am (UTC)Right now, most actors are pretty damn happy to get any job. Unless you're a "name" actor, and you get too many. Spread the wealth, literally.

Date: 2010-01-21 04:51 pm (UTC)I still find it rich that this guest spot is such a huge mistake, where his spot on 24 or Burn Notice (both shows based somewhat more in reality than SPN, and with plenty of immoral killing) were not The End of the World for Shanks's Career.

Date: 2010-01-21 08:32 pm (UTC)No, I think he was great on Stargate SG-1 but I really like the actors on SPN. :D
Not that it's the best show ever, you know? It's just that I kinda like it anyway, it's like my guilty pleasure cause it really sucks with female characters and don't get me started on gays or non-white people... :(
But anyway, I kinda like Padalecki and Ackles, I think they've grown over the years and that they're starting to show some actual talent, afaic, and nt just good looks. :)
Just my two cents...

Date: 2010-01-21 11:44 pm (UTC)I thought MS did a great job of fitting in seamlessly with BN, but I think the core cast was always pretty damn good, even when they had a guest star of lesser quality.
Some people are just obsessed with how absolutely perfect they think MS is. I do like his acting quite a lot, but c'mon.
