Can't get out of doing some practicing, darn it. I've been putting it off, but it's really not in my best interest NOT to practice, so, off I am, to do some 50wpm dictations. Ugh. I'll probably have to do them at least five times each before I stop making mistakes, or losing my spot because I'm thinking to much about where my fingers should go.

It's just so much more fun to read or write (now that I'm getting back into my world-building). Maybe I can actually think about it while I practice. The teacher told us that's a *good* thing when you can think about something else while you're typing away on the stenomachine. And I have been able to do that, to a point., it's pretty crazy when that happens.

Nope. That's a Stenograph machine. It has three banks of keys, and is not a QWERTY board.

It looks more like this:

number bar
STPH*FPLT
SKWR*RBGS
AO EU

It's more like playing a piano than typing. The words are chords; most words are only one stroke, or two, with some being four strokes. Words are built up like building blocks, phonetically. It's fun! (but a lot of work, too)

I've never done steno work (though I was fascinated by the machines when I was doing juvie court), but I can do the Zen thing while typing and be doing something else while typing away. I agree with your teacher, you've gotten good when you don't have to think about typing, you just do it.

I've weirded out some of the teens when I'm typing about 80 wpm on an article while still carrying on a conversation with them. But these days if they can hit 30-40 wpm, they think they are typing wizards. I totally would have failed out of my class if I'd gone below 60.

Yeah, my typing has never been *that* fast, but it has gotten a whole lot better since I've been typing every day.
