Target: $25; Vons: $55
Feb. 18th, 2009 04:07 pmThe Guy likes to take supplements for his joints, particularly Osteo Bi-Flex brand glucosamine chondroitin.
I went to Target first to pick up some stuff like shampoo, a dog comb (misplaced Goldy's other comb, darn it) and Benedryl, again for Goldy. I stopped by the supplement aisle to see what Target was charging for a bottle of Osteo Bi-Flex. For the 120 pill bottle, they priced it at $25.34. Okay, not too bad, but I had a $5 coupon from Vons for the same brand burning a hole in my purse.
Off I went to my next stop, the Vons kitty-cornered from Target. The pricing on the shelf said something like $48 for two bottles (of the same stuff, same bottle, etc). So I picked up two bottles. At check-out, they rang up to $110! For TWO bottles of this stuff! I returned one right away, but didn't realize how much they were individually, and ended up standing for 20 minutes at the service counter waiting to return the other bottle.
Cripes. $55 for ONE bottle of this stuff. I told the woman behind the service counter it was $25 at Target. Sheesh. I'm not getting any more OTC medical supplies from Vons after this. Even with coupons.
I guess Vons has to raise its prices on some products, or they lose lots of money. They've had a lot of sales recently.

Date: 2009-02-19 12:25 am (UTC)Both my father and I have arthritis and we've been looking for something that would ease the pain a bit (and hopefully stop or at least slow any continued progression).

Date: 2009-02-19 12:46 am (UTC)I'd say, if you can afford it, get a bottle and try it out. The generics are a bit cheaper than this name brand, but I'm not sure if they're as effective. I don't know if Osteo adds other stuff to the mix.

Date: 2009-02-20 03:52 pm (UTC)I worked as a professional/indistrial housekeeper for over a decade and did some serious damage to some joints, both through repetitive motion and from impact injuries. Like you, I was feeling (and moving) like an old person while still in my 20's. Here it is 20 years later, and while I don't expect the damage to be undone life has become much more livable with Osteo Bi-Flex.

Date: 2009-02-20 06:19 pm (UTC)I ended up buying the Target store brand for the same price, but with 80 extra pills in it. Hubby said that it was lacking a certain ingredient but he wasn't upset about it-he can add that through another pill.

Date: 2009-02-20 06:15 pm (UTC)My husband's doctor recommended it to him, even though he wasn't entirely convinced (ie, not backed up by studies) that it worked. The doc had heard anecdotally about it.
But it does work.

Date: 2009-02-20 03:46 pm (UTC)If the sale price doesn't ring up at the register I dispute it. They have to sell you the product at the sale price if it's clearly marked on the shelf or in a sales flier. The tricky part is making sure you read the fine print on the shelf tag, like the price expiration date or product code.
I've had two disputes turn out with opposite results in the past. Both included shelf tags which were left up after the sale price was supposed to have expired. One cashier let me have the product at the sale price, the other flatly refused. And the one who refused was rude about it.
Let the buyer beware.

Date: 2009-02-20 06:14 pm (UTC)I was planning on stopping buying medical and OTC stuff at Vons, anyway. Target tends to be cheaper on MANY items, including food. I just wish we had a Super Target nearby. As it is, I can save a fair amount by buying frozen foods and milk and so forth at Target.
