FOUND IT!

All I can say is, thank heaven's for Apple's Genius program on iTunes. OMG. I turned the silly thing on, and started going through my list of favorite songs. And finally after clicking on a Third Eye Blind's That's How It's Going to Be, the sidebar suggested a list of songs...and the song I was looking for was The Verve Pipe's The Freshman! Yay!

No way I would have ever found that on my own in a million years.

*whispers* I'd actually wondered if it was The Freshman, but I never got around to offering that up. It's ten years old. I thought it was outside the range. *looks shifty*

This is where my total nonpayment of attention for music comes in. I mean, I knew I liked it, but I guess since it came out that long ago I'd half-forgotten it.

What made you think it could have been that song, because from the clues I had, I don't think I would have been able to suss it out! (or maybe we share some brain cells, I dunno)

I think it was the "compromise" bit, though I can't even say if that word appears in the song. Heh. I really don't know.

That's kind of scary, eh?

I... totally would not have guessed that at all. AT ALL.

But "compromise" does appear in that song, in one of the catchier bits... something like "that made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise."

You have mad skillz. The only thing I could think of was "When You Were Young" by... The Killers? Maybe? I forget.

Turned out my 12 year thought I meant that song by the Killers, but when I looked those lyrics up, that wasn't it.

I downloaded it from iTunes, and she listened to it, but then told me she didn't like it (The Freshman, that is). It's an odd song about a guy's reaction to his girlfriend (or friend's girlfriend, I'm not sure) killing herself because her boyfriend left her.

Not exactly a subject matter I *like*, but it's so typical of how I remember being in my late teens, and all the college kids I knew back then. Some of them were pretty effed up. (mid 80s)

I really like "The Freshman," and the Verve Pipe in general. I have two of their albums around here somewhere.

My personal favorite song with a message though is Ben Folds' "Brick," which is basically about the guy and his girlfriend going to get her an abortion. It got really frequent radio play in Utah when it first came out, which leads me to believe that most of the people listening had no idea what they were listening to. I liked that. ;D
