Yeah, I realize that a lot of my flist isn't into Stargate much anymore, but I just heard the newest spoilers, and if what has been speculated happens, I'll be out of the fandom very fast.
I would really really hate and despise and go beyond ever wanting to see Daniel Jackson again if this "baby" was his in any way shape or form.
I've heard that when a show resorts to having a baby somewhere in its plot line as a major device, it has jumped the shark, dove back in the water, and been devoured. It's CHEEZY -- and gee, although it's one of the oldest plot devices in the book, can anyone else think of a recent series of movies which featured the young father not knowing that his companion was pregnant, and that the child/ren were especially powerful? Oh, right - the repugnant Anakin/Amidala storyline, riiiight.
But as long as this "baby" is not Daniel's in any way shape or form, I'll still be able to stomach it. Because going that direction is utterly repulsive to me on a visceral level - I haven't figured out why, but it's just WRONG.
So, of course, we'll find out that Daniel and Vala had quick sex in a closet on the Prometheus right before she left, and LO! She's pregnant! Daniel won't know until Vala goes back to her own body, but now that gives National Treasure the opportunity to give him sad teary eyes and break the news to him. Then he'll have to find the baby and Vala and...let me vomit now. This is such a Mary Sue plotline it's ridiculous.
So, suffice to say, I am not happy. I know Stargate has had plenty of cheesy storylines over the years...but really.

Date: 2005-09-08 09:16 pm (UTC)Like you said, "baby" is a sign that the show has gone South. I've *liked" the plots so far this year. I've been interested despite the loss of Jack and some other nitpicks I had.
But having Vala just magically be with child crosses the line, whether it's Daniel's or not. It will be helpful for my sanity if it's not somehow Daniel's. But if it is...then everything that was so special about Daniel/Sha're will be gone for me. Everything that was important to his drive to find Sha're's child, even though the boy wasn't his own, will be gone. Because now they'll transfer that specialness to Vala and this child, and that will make it seems like Daniel and Sha're were meaningless.
And I can't take that.
*prays this spoiler changes or is false*

Date: 2005-09-08 09:30 pm (UTC)I don't see this affecting how special Sha're was to Daniel in the past. But it is tiresome for them to *possibly* reassign this old chestnut to another character who I feel doesn't hold a candle romantically to Sha're. And doesn't have the *character* if you know what I mean. Vala is always going to be the opposite of what Sha're was = out for herself. And if they turn her into the kind of woman that Sha're was, then they kill what makes her character *interesting*. There is sooo much wrong with Vala being pregnant.
If it's not Daniel's, then this kind of plotting still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but I'll tolerate it. If it IS Daniel's - bye bye, Stargate. The show will have ended for me, I think, except to MTS3K it. I'll still probably stick around OS and other forums, but even having Ben Browder and MS on screen together along with CJ won't do it for me.

Date: 2005-09-08 09:41 pm (UTC)No, I don't see it that way. Married people can have sexual tension with other people. It's life and it happens. It's when people act on it that is gets touchy. Sorry for that pun. It would need to be a different kind of sexual tension, though. Daniel would have to be more restrained. Vala? I don't care. She's immoral imo anyway.

I wasn't clear. I mean for the viewer. For me, Sha're will always be special to Daniel. But to nearly duplicate the story he had with Sha're and transpose it onto another character, one that is, like you said, the antithesis of Sha're, well that bastardizes the storyline for me. It would be like trying to make Mitchell's relationship with Daniel the same as Jack's. Stuff like that, I can't abide.
But yeah, Vala pregant is wrong. But if the kid isn't Daniel's, then at least I can still watch the show, even if the whole thing is dumb. But if it ends up being Daniel's, I lose whatever respect I had left.

That's kinda what I meant, too -- I wasn't clear, either. :-)
I meant *for me* it wouldn't cheapen what Daniel had with Sha're - but it *does* cheapen the character of Daniel and whatever remaining plotlines they're planning for him IMHO after that point.

Date: 2005-09-08 10:17 pm (UTC)I did it for X-Files. And I shipped on that show, but I wasn't die-hard. I wanted them to get together at the very end. Bah.
Anyway, I am sad now. I am going to go think of bunnies and puppies.

Date: 2005-09-08 10:24 pm (UTC)You're excused for the pun, LOL. Thinking about this...there have been earlier instances of Daniel going off the Sha're wagon here and there in the earlier seasons (alien/drugged influences or whatever), so I'm not sure if this part of my objection holds up.
I guess if the immoral/amoral Vala returns, still married (doubtful, though she'd still be married), then I can see where the Daniel/Vala shippers would be all up in arms, because that effectively kiboshs any possibility that they'd go for the nooky and still have Daniel be an upstanding kind of guy. Again, it would make him as bad as a two-timing Carter.
Frankly, though, I can't see RCC fulfilling any shipper fantasies of Daniel having a child by any woman, except to make it out of wedlock and with a amoral woman who might have a heart of gold, and is only a step up from another certain type of trope character.
