(no subject)

Got a call from my RN (the type that can write out prescriptions-what are they called?) about my blood work results. My diabetes screening, and thyroid, came back clear, but she did say that my triglycerides were high, and I *seemed* to be borderline anemic. I think I've been borderline anemic my entire life, which could explain my entire life!  I'll have to go back in a few weeks for another blood-letting. I hope I get the same technician who drew it last time. She was awesome. The nurse doesn't want me to take iron on my own-something to do with iron over-dosing. Or, she wants to make sure about that.

So far on the SBD? Doing okay. It's a good thing I like eggs. But, in the interest of saving my cholesterol levels, I bought a big container of egg whites only. Mornings are my worst times, carb-wise. I mean, what else is there to eat in the morning besides cereals, pancakes, bacon, and so forth? I do get tired of eggs and omeletts every day. I haven't weighed myself yet, but then, it's been one week since my physical. I clocked in at 172 pounds on the scale at that office. That's a 1/2 pound less than two weeks before that, when I went in for a different type of appointment.

When I went food shopping all I could think of was, wow, this place is a sugar pit! Virtually EVERYTHING has corn syrup or some variation of corn syrup in it, or straight out sugar from sugar cane, or something that has a -tol ending. A few weeks ago, I read labels in the Italian pasta/sauce aisle and in the barbecue sauce aisle, and couldn't find a single sauce that did not have some kind of sugar in it. And I mean *corn syrup*.

Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, fortunately, stocks food not permeated with the stuff.

I still have to get my ass back to the YMCA for a few reasons: work out, and sign the kids up for camps today.

I've discovered that now I've cut out most of my "bad" snacking, when I do get the munchies I crave fruit instead. Still sugar, but at least it's not artificial. I need to improve on the veggies. I just really hate raw broccoli and I've never been big on carrots. I need a quick go-to and haven't found one in vegetable form yet.

Lowfat yogurt with some cut up fruit makes a great breakfast, if you can find one made with less sugar than regular yogurt fare. I've even started enjoying bananas - mmmmm, strawberries and bananas cut up together for a quick fruit salad is delicious. Unfortunately, you'll be hungry again very quickly.

The point of the first two weeks of the South Beach Diet is to completely cut out almost all carbohydrates--no fruits, no breads, no potatoes, no yams, no pastas, no whole milk (I don't like that anyhow), no bacon, no honey-baked ham (not a problem for me, as I dislike ham), no ketchup: nothing that has any fair amount of sugars in it.

So for now, that means I can't have yogurt. At least for a couple of weeks. Or fruit. Or carrots and peas! Those are high in sugar, too. Why not steam your broccoli?

Oh, I do. But that takes a bit of quick out of quick snack. ;)

I vary my breakfasts: Fruit and yogart with a scoop of protein powder mixed in. Fresh oatmeal (not instant) with raisins and walnuts and a scoop of protein powder. And I make protein shakes a lot, too.

I'll probably vary it more when I can reintegrate carbs back in-in about two weeks. In the meantime, I'll be looking mournfully at the yogurt section of the diary case. :-(

While it won't help during this restricted period, yogurt is something I have at breakfast as well (alternating the days when I have raisin bran). A good "plain" yogurt can be personalized by things such as bran buds or fruit or protein powder or whatever. Everyone looks for different things, and for me adding more calcium and fiber in my diet is a goal. Oh, and broccoli works for both of those for me ;-)

My all time favorite thing for breakfast right now is miniwheats. Mmmmm, miniwheats. I should probably toss what's left in the box--about enough for two bowl's worth. Waah.

I think I'll go eat some cheese now. :-(

Once you are out of the no-carbs phase what is your limit per day for carbs? I just looked at the box of Bran Buds and it has 24 g per serving but Raisin Bran has 46 g! I've become a real label-reader and clearly (with your attention to corn syrup) you have too. It is a good thing that ingredients are much easier to find on packaging than they used to be.
