What NOT to do if you're obsessed with plastic surgery or bettering your looks. Seriously, do NOT click on this link if you're easily grossed out by self-mutilation. A woman in Korea ran out of the silicon a doctor had given her to inject into her face (????...don't get me started on the Korean health system) and started injecting cooking oil instead. Hers is not the only case of obsessive self "betterment" in the name of looking good. And it reminds me of Sarah Burge the Barbie Woman in Britain and then there's Cindy Jackson and Jenny Lee   both the US.

Here's a fascinating page comparing a 5'4" woman to a Barbie doll. It's followed by other statistics on the other pages. It's scary.

Yikes. I just really don't get plastic surgery. Okay, to qualify that: I do get wanting to look better, but I'm of the firm belief that just because the technology is available doesn't mean we should use it. Eyelids drooping and causing impairment to your vision? Go ahead and get that eye lift. I don't think that's unreasonable. But for goodness' sake, stop before you look like Joan Rivers.

But I honestly can't imagine being so unhappy with my own looks that I'd change them completely. I'm sure Dr. 90210 would love to tell me all that's wrong with me and how to "fix" it, but dang. I like my "flaws", thank you. They're what make me, me.

Well, that's...ew.

BTW, the page comparing a Barbie doll with a real woman not only gets its statistics wrong, but the example is really old. The original Barbie (shown in the picture) was only supposed to be 5'7' tall, so right off the bat the graphics are misleading. Mattel has done much better with the newer doll bodies (just don't get me started on those hideous balloon heads). And anyway, research has shown that girls who play with Barbie dolls not only *don't* suffer from too much pressure to look like one, but that they have much better developed senses of creativity and imagination.

Yes, I buy Barbies, both collector editions and playline dolls. 'Cause I like to play with Barbies. And I have many playsets, too. Plus, I make my own room boxes, furniture, accessories and clothing for my dolls. Keeps me feeling young. :)
