This isn't actually a review, because I haven't exactly watched it beyond a certain point. The Guy bought the blu-ray edition of it a few weeks ago, and I told him I wasn't up to seeing it. He had not a clue why (I did, I've read reviews about it).

So, he popped it into the player, and the movie started. I sat down with my salad on my lap, eating, when the movie got the scene where the psychotic military step-dad starts bashing in the face of a rebel. I mean, fuck. It took a moment for us to understand exactly what the movie was showing, and then yes, I ran out of the room saying, "Fucking Jesus Christ", and the Guy apologized and was in a black mood for a few hours after seeing it. The reason I didn't want to see it was because it's not exactly an upper of a movie, but even I wasn't aware of the explicit gore and violence that...it's just the type of violence it is. I can take violence in movies of a certain sort that Americans are used to-but not this kind of personalized bash-your-face-in category. I'm not exaggerating; I genuinely don't need to acquire PTSD because a movie. That goes for movies that include explicit rape, or even NONexplicit rape.

I have a low threshold for it. So. No reviews of Pan's Labyrinth by me. Ever.

Ditto! And to top off the generic ultraviolence... Pan is one of my FAV Pagan archetypes (gentle, playful, protective and sexy - at least IME working with that energy) and to see him used in such a movie just made everything else about it worse. Not to mention that their version of Pan just plain creeped me out. SOOOO not a movie I ever plan to try watching again. Ick all the way! Sorry you had such a similar bad reaction :-

Yeah. Even worse, there were several kids running around our house. Some of them could have handled it (they regularly watch horror movies at their house) and some of them play bloody first-person shooter games, but this...ugh.

I've no idea if the Guy is going to watch it when I'm not around, or when the kids are asleep. There are *very* few movies we have such a visceral reaction to, and the only one other movie that we shelved out of sight was "Sin City".

I just saw it and I thought it was incredible, but yes - very violent and sad. I handle it by looking away, I guess. Personally, I prefer it when it's realistic than when it's glorified, that really makes me sad.
But yeah, not a movie for kids, more for adults I think.
