Pan's Labyrinth and violence
Dec. 27th, 2008 07:01 pmThis isn't actually a review, because I haven't exactly watched it beyond a certain point. The Guy bought the blu-ray edition of it a few weeks ago, and I told him I wasn't up to seeing it. He had not a clue why (I did, I've read reviews about it).
So, he popped it into the player, and the movie started. I sat down with my salad on my lap, eating, when the movie got the scene where the psychotic military step-dad starts bashing in the face of a rebel. I mean, fuck. It took a moment for us to understand exactly what the movie was showing, and then yes, I ran out of the room saying, "Fucking Jesus Christ", and the Guy apologized and was in a black mood for a few hours after seeing it. The reason I didn't want to see it was because it's not exactly an upper of a movie, but even I wasn't aware of the explicit gore and violence that...it's just the type of violence it is. I can take violence in movies of a certain sort that Americans are used to-but not this kind of personalized bash-your-face-in category. I'm not exaggerating; I genuinely don't need to acquire PTSD because a movie. That goes for movies that include explicit rape, or even NONexplicit rape.
I have a low threshold for it. So. No reviews of Pan's Labyrinth by me. Ever.

Date: 2008-12-29 04:48 am (UTC)I've no idea if the Guy is going to watch it when I'm not around, or when the kids are asleep. There are *very* few movies we have such a visceral reaction to, and the only one other movie that we shelved out of sight was "Sin City".
