The last two weeks were rough on the steno machine. The last two lessons (three, really) 7, 8 and 9, were hard. They were long. And had tons of briefs to memorize. Not to mention some complex finger placements and multiple vowels. This week is going much easier for some reason. The lesson isn't quite as long. As long as I *trust* my brain and fingers, I do relatively well. But as soon as I start thinking about what I'm doing *BAM!* Tons of screw-ups.
The pattern of easy/hard/easy/hard/easy is plain. The entire class seems to go in this cycle. Almost no one mails in perfect notes (those strips of paper with the steno shorthand on it). Well, except for one person in the class.
And soon I'll be buying an electronic Stenograph Stentura student machine, along with some other stuff (probably a program as well) so that I can gain the benefit of self-correction as I type. That should help a lot. But I'm a cheapo, and the thought of spending upwards to $2K gives me the willies. But it'll all be for the greater good. In a couple of years I'll be able to start pulling in some decent money, hopefully. I just have to practice, practice, practice!

Date: 2008-10-01 06:17 am (UTC)I find this same thing when playing the guitar. There are some songs I just play, but if I think about it and start thinking about where to put my fingers and so on, I'll just completely lose my place and screw up. It's weird, but I know what you mean, anyway.

I think you're doing unbelievably well. That is a lot of money to shell out, but you seem so determined, which is awesome.

Date: 2008-10-01 06:32 am (UTC)The way the online class works is you take part A (lessons 1-30) during the first half of the year and then part B (lessons 31-60) during the second half of the year. And then, if you feel confident in your ability going 50-60 wpm, you can take the online speed classes.
Theoretically, it does mean I'll have more time to absorb the materials (briefs, shorthand, etc). And so far, I have to admit that I'm kind of amazed that I'm able to pick up the briefs as quickly as I have (not counting some brief phrases you're not supposed to use because they're actually words).
It's like writing in NaNoWriMo. You have to trust your mind and brain, or it's simply not going to be much fun, and it won't work as well.
