Seven years ago, I watched California time, the towers being smashed in by two airplanes and then falling to the ground. At the time, I mostly felt amazement and feeling stunned. The normally busy airspace above where I live was silent except for the sound of military jets sweeping through the skies. There weren't even any helicopters thpping around.

For the past six years, I managed to sweep the realities of all the people who died and how they died, out of my mind because they lived 3000 miles away and it wasn't something I wanted to react about.

But this year, it's changed. The History Channel aired a show about it from the POV of people who'd been there reporting in to the NYC 911 center. NPR radio has been airing interviews with relatives. And EVERY time, I end up having to leave the room, or sit in my car, and cry.

It's not just that, either. I started wondering why there wasn't an effort to remember (for instance) women who've been murdered by their husbands or boyfriends? What about all those children murdered by their caretakers? It all makes me so sad and angry.

Best wishes to all the relatives of those who died.
