LA Wildfires

 I'm in the La area, in the San Fernando Valley, and we're okay here. 

The Santa Clarita fires are North of us by about fifteen miles, I think? We can smell the smoke, and see the smoke when it blows this way, but that's about it. I'm not sure how far the fires are from our location, but I'm pretty sure they won't reach this far. However, that doesn't mean that in my head, I'm not mentally packing what I want to rush into the cars when/if it comes time to leave. 

There were some nasty fires last year that left lots of ash and smoke and stuff all over the Valley, at least in our section of it. It's going to happen again this year. 

I wasn't even quite aware of the fires until the voracious news coverage finally leaked through my "I hate LA News" net, and saw some entries on LJ about it. Yeah, pitiful, but if you lived here, you'd know how awful the news is most of the time. Awful and fluffy and completely bad and celebrity centered. Nat and Chet of Boston, where are you when we need you?

It's hard to believe how MANY fires there are this year! They're EVERYWHERE!

Is the Porter Ranch fire out now? It would be the closest to you? Or would Stevenson Ranch?

Porter Ranch? Um...I didn't hear about THAT one. That town is about five miles away from me, down the road. Stevenson Ranch is North on the 5, I think, over the pass where those trucks had a major collision, I think.

My daughter's English teacher wasn't into work yesterday, I'm sure because of the fires and the jam in traffic - she lives in Santa Clarita, where one of the fires is starting to rage out of control nearby. Not fun.

Nat and Chet of Boston, where are you when we need you?

Er...not in Boston?

Natalie and Chet got divorced years ago. They still anchored for channel 5 for a couple years, then Chet disappeared. (Okay, he left for another job, I think in the midwest. There was no fanfare though.) Natalie retired earlier this year, and got special programs dedicated to all her years of service. The parts I watched had no Chet in them.

Boston News is now just as bad as the rest of the country...celebrities seem to count for three of every five minutes, and sports for the rest. Jack Williams is still on channel 4 though, and so they're a little less celebreality based.

Natalie and Chet got divorced? And left? Wow. :-( I had no idea. Not that I care about the gossip, but just...I guess I expected them to be there always. *g*

I miss Natalie and Chet. I hate the local news and the national news and all the news channels. *g* I only found out about the fires when I recorded a show that I thought was about global warming, but it must have been preempted.

I'm glad to hear that you're okay where you are now. I hope that continues. The evacuation reminds me of hurricanes. We've had to do that a couple of times, and it's not fun, because you really have no control over what happens to your house or your stuff while you're gone.

I really hope you don't end up having to evacuate. Fifteen miles doesn't seem that far to me, but I don't really know how these things work, so hopefully it won't reach where you are.

We're even getting a little smoke and ash down here in West L.A. / Santa Monica, where the annual wildfires never seem to bother us in the least.

I've been watching some news since this started, just to gape at the continued progress of the fire. Tonight they showed this flame that started twirling - it was literally a fire tornado.
