The Latest Heroes
Oct. 22nd, 2007 10:21 pmAh, Heroes. What am I thinking about you these days?
The writers are ramping up on the connections aspect of the story. That's good, because when you have such disparate characters, story-logic dictates that a pattern be created for the audience to hang on. A viewer (at least this viewer) likes nothing better than to see the threads start to weave together. And it helps when the threads have some forward motion, which, unfortunately, Peter's boring Irish idyll isn't really doing. So, he looked into the Box and found a ticket to Montreal, a picture of him and Nathan, a passport with Emo Hair and some random bills scattered about. That's what all the excitement and tension was about?
Hiro's adventure is also yawn-worthy at this point. The writers were smart enough to frame with Ando taking the very old scrollls to a restorer. Clever device, considering he read the first two or three easily enough, AND it answered a question I had niggling at my: did Hiro decide not to return, or could he not return anyhow?
I was grateful that Claire wasn't in this episode. It meant I didn't have to watch West and Claire snogging. (had to watch Peter and Irish Girl snogging, though, for MUCH too long)
And, even though last week Sylar appeared on the Wonder Death Twin's doorstep, so to speak, I didn't miss that story-line at all. Hopefully by the time the audience rejoins them on their journey, they'll have somehow snuck across the border and are half-way to New York. Conveniently, Molly and Mohinder aren't in the apartment any longer, so there's nothing there for Sylar to kill. Well, unless he comes across Matt, who is starting to expand on his powers now that he knows what his father can do. You have to remember that these characters probably haven't read a comic book in their lives, and have no idea how to learn about their powers. Except Micah, that is, and Micah and his cousin Monica are perhaps the most with-it of the bunch, actually trying to learn about what they can do. Mohinder had better watch it. Monica may be sweet, but I have a feeling she's as fierce about her family as Nikki/Jessica is.
I do like how Mohinder's position with the Company is expanding, to his bewilderment, to going out on assignment and people recovery. It gives him great latitude to connect with all the others - Nikki/Jessica, for instance; and Monica. Of course, little does he know Monica is Nikki's niece. And I wonder how Jessica will feel to see part of her family (DL's family) taken into the Company. Clearly, Jessica isn't thrilled with Bob the Golden Touch man. I hope his ability is ONLY for inanimate objects, and not people. Otherwise, we could find Jessica/Nikki as a beautiful golden statue. I do wonder why she went after Bob.
Ah, Matt and Nathan and Matt's Really Bad Dad. Bad Dad is completely self-absorbed, and it's a wonder either of the other men believed a word he said. It's great that Matt now knows he *can* break out of the mind-prison - but now Mohinder has moved Molly into the Company's clutches, and there's no way he can get to her. Unless Bob gets to Bad Dad (what's his name?).
It's strange for me to review a show explaining why I think it was good as much for what *wasn't* in it, as for what was. The writers really should have gotten a handle on juggling all the plot-lines (such as they are, for Peter and Hiro and the Wonder Death Twins) and it feels like they finally are, but I still have some reservations about how they're portioning out the storylines, and to whom, and how they're moving the plots along. It would be so easy for this show to slide into mediocrity, not that it's a classic at the moment, it hasn't reached that point yet. But as long as they're connecting the characters more and more, and moving it along, it's fine. Sometimes it feels like someone's NaNo novel. I'm surprised they haven't thrown a plot Ninja into the works.
Just get Peter the hell out of Ireland, please, and away from his passion-chicky and into the story. His girlfriend, like Simone, doesn't seem to have any purpose other than to sleep with Peter and be his sidekick sex object and be hot. It was why I didn't like Simone, and it's why I don't like Irish-chick. She's one-dimensional and has no plot of her own.
Oh yes; the new Electro Girl. Nicely psychotic, nicely petulant to her parent, who ever that is. I'm not overly curious about her, since I don't know much about her. Who else is she going to face-off with? What's the point of bringing her in, if there wasn't going to be an actual confrontation with Peter? Where are the fireworks? (the real ones, not the ones with Irish-chicky) Honest, wouldn't have minded actual conflict and confrontation of the comic-book kind. What about it, writers?

Both Peter and Hiro's storylines seem to be stuck in place, though perhaps Peter's will finally move forward with this Montreal thing. I can't figure out why their stories are so bland this year. Maybe because they were featured so heavily last year and the writers are trying to spread the love?
Except Micah, that is, and Micah and his cousin Monica are perhaps the most with-it of the bunch, actually trying to learn about what they can do. Mohinder had better watch it. Monica may be sweet, but I have a feeling she's as fierce about her family as Nikki/Jessica is.
Monica is the only new hero I'm liking this season. While she's having a bit of a freakout about all this, she's not actively freaking out, and instead was trying to figure out what was happening even before Micah clued her in, and she seemed to be trying to figure out how to use it for good too.
It gives him great latitude to connect with all the others - Nikki/Jessica, for instance; and Monica. Of course, little does he know Monica is Nikki's niece.
I found it interesting that Micah had left the room before Mohinder came in. I'm 99% certain they met during the final battle with Sylar, and probably were in contact after that too.
My first thought was that Niki and/or Jessica were actually in on the plot with Matt, Mohinder and Bennet to take down the Company. That could still be the case, even though it didn't appear that Niki wanted anything more than to be "cured" of her powers. It's possible they know they're being watched, so they're playing along.
It's great that Matt now knows he *can* break out of the mind-prison - but now Mohinder has moved Molly into the Company's clutches, and there's no way he can get to her. Unless Bob gets to Bad Dad (what's his name?).
Bad Dad is Maury Parkman. I'm still not totally convinced he's the one who's killing the first generation out of the photo, though I am convinced he's an asshole. He could be torturing Molly, and attempting it with Matt and Nathan because he thinks they're there on behalf of the Company or whoever to track him down and kill him.
I have to wonder how much truth there was in what Maury told Matt about his powers. Will Matt's powers become like Maury's? He did manage to send to someone for the first time, but that may have been a fluke due to the situation and/or he might only be able to communicate like that with those who have power. It reminds me of how Angela Petrelli has been able to block Matt, yet can clearly send messages when she wants to.
We haven't seen much of the "family lines" regarding powers, but the ones we have don't support the idea of the exact same power going to a child. Claire's parents can fly and control fire, yet she can heal. Micah's parents can phase through walls and... whatever the hell Niki can do, yet he has an affinity with electronics.
Hmmm... if Matt can "send" now, what do you want to bet he has to go into Molly's nightmare to get her out? Those early scenes where Matt and Mohinder were fighting over what happened just killed me. Mohinder wasn't pouring salt on Matt's wounds, he was pouring acid. Matt deserved some of that, but damn... killed me.
But as long as they're connecting the characters more and more, and moving it along, it's fine.
This "chapter" (season) is called "Generations" so I expected to see more connections between the characters, but I've been suprised by how some of the connections are working out. I have heard the writers and actors saying this season will have a lot of characters connecting in ways we wouldn't expect and that definitely seems to be the case.
Oh, and "I'm not a cargo jet." Best. Line. Ever. ;)
