breathes heavily in panic for a moment and then...

OMG. Yesterday, the Guy wanted to double-check the numbers on a fantasy loan (ex, how much would the monthly payment be for a $600K house, right next door? - our neighbors are rumored to be selling in June). And I could not turn my PDA on. It was the Black Screen of Death. I hooked the power line back up - I had taken it with me on a recent trip - and sure nuff, the PDA came back on, but not under it's own power, I realized that when, after having downloaded its back-up of the entire system, it blanked out again after I popped it off its little power stand.

Luckily for me, I have a back-up battery I bought a while back that IS'NT dead. *However*, I'm not sure if it's the original battery, or the secondary battery. Either way, THIS baby still holds a charge. The Guy said it was a good thing it wasn't the OSystem. Yeah. I guess. But what a PITA, DLing every single program I had backed up on the computer, finding their keys so they'd be valid, and making sure they worked. And now I have these "ghost" icons for programs I don't have on it anymore, which is annoying.

And thank heavens (most of all) that I still have my address book, and my calender appointments still there. All else is secondary, really. Oh, and my fics and eBooks. That's pretty important too, considering the ONLY place in the world my NaNo novel from this year is on my PDA! Eeps! At least that is all on an SD chip. I must back up the entire system on the desktop, I think.

That was the thing I ated most about my PDA. If I didn't keep it recharged it lost everything. A mobile phone is able to keep information for christsake. How had would it be for the PDA makers to add this feature.

Well...I didn't know that was a PDA fault - there IS back-up battery power time stored within the PDA, but depending on your settings, it eats the power up. A dead battery has never happened to me before! I wonder if it has something to do with me powering it up in my car...maybe there was a short or god knows what going on while I wasn't looking.

This recently happened to the Guy with his PDA, too. He lost *everything*. I guess the key is to keep AWESOME records and backups of everything you put on your PDA, and don't store valuable data on the PDA itself - use storage cards. And now I have to go rebuy a program I bought a while back but didn't save the email as a record. Dumb me.

Yikes! Make a backup copy of your NaNo novel! *g*

I'm glad you didn't lose everything, even if it was a pain in the butt.
