Torchwood's in town
Jan. 1st, 2007 03:42 pmTorchwood's in Town...at least on DiVX DVD. The Guy bought a DVR recorder that plays DiVX downloads from the internet, so he transferred all of the episodes (ten of them so far?) onto DVD. We watched the first three episodes a couple of nights ago. It's pretty good! Definitely NOT a Dr Who program, is it? A sex-obsessed alien? Um...hokay!
It's fairly derivative, with aspects I've seen in other shows or movies. And Captain Jack...he looks, well...plasticized and shiny, like a manniquinn. I see that Owen is something of a skeeve, but in the episode where he FEELS what happened to that girl who was murdered under the bridge, it would seem that he got a dose of what being taken advantage of feels like. Gwen seems okay, but the writers are making her a little to strident, and Jack and the rest of Torchwood a little too callous in order to make Gwen the Moral Figure. The asian girl hasn't made a real impact. She's just there as the convenient technobabbler type. I hope they'll focus on her soon.
I love Gwen's boyfriend (or is she married to him?) - and frankly, the on-going hints of 'ship' between Gwen and Jack are more than a little distasteful. He's a great guy (her boyfriend, that is) while Jack is the classic Bad Boy who Needs Reforming.
There's a whole lot of guy-kissing and girl-kissing and sexuality on this show, which prompted my Guy to ask aloud if the producer of this show wasn't gay himself! That, I don't know. But, after all the dry and sexless (or totally raging hetero American shows) on the air right now, it's more than refreshing to see some "unstandard" sexuality on the screen. At least in this show, it's part of the design of the show, so I'm not minding all the sex popping up in it...but it feels like the writers are trying a mite too hard to make it "not your grandmother's science fiction show" and a sort of anti-Dr Who show.
After I get my dose of CSI tonight, I'll probably watch some more Torchwood. I really hope they unfocus on Gwen a bit, and get moving with some actual story, you know?
