Goldy Eats a Chicken Bone

My cute, overweight, fuzzy mutt Goldy loves to eat. Oh yes, he does.

We had chicken last night - a cut up chicken - and Mermaid, who is a self-professed semi-chicken eater/vegetarian, said she'd take a leg. The leg was maybe five inches long. She didn't eat it, and left the table. Then I left the table, thinking she was going to go back and finish her dinner.

Moments later, there's some noise from the kitchen area (it's not blocked off from the rest of the house) and eager Goldy had jumped up on the table, snatched the cooked chicken leg, and wolfed it down. Guy said he thought he heard some crunching sounds - but when we raced into the kitchen, all we saw was a guilty looking dog. No chicken leg to be seen.

I know that chicken bones are not good for dogs - can even be dangerous. Should I make an appt for the stupid dog, or wait to see if he passes the bones or digests them?

I'd call the vet and get thier advise, although if he hasn't choked or pooped bloody stool by now you're probably okay.

Sometimes I wonder about animals. My Kasper Kat will eat anything. Including mom's Cuddles Cat's hairballs. Blech

No, he hasn't choked. I didn't watch him go poop today either, but he *seems* fine. He just keeps looking guilty as sin.

Definitely call the vet. Chicken bones splinter when the dog chews them and can puncture various body parts--throat, stomach, intestines...better to be safe than sorry.

Agreed, call the vet and hear what they say. Stupid dogs, don't know what's best for them... *runs off to huggle Axl*

I'd call the vet for peace of mind but if the dog seems okay then likely there isn't a problem. Our dogs have all had various stupid moments with bones in the past and have been okay.

But peace of mind is good to have so calling won't hurt.

I'm keeping an eye on him. He's doing what he usually does. he doesn't seem all that different. He ate a bowl of his food, with no problem. We'll see. If he's acting out of character tomorrow, then I'll know something's up, and take him to the vet.
