Question for Icon makers

When you make an icon, do you put the image together and THEN come up with the appropriate saying, or have some saying you want to use, and THEN find the image?

Cuz, after I make an icon, I have trouble coming up with the pithy wordage to make the icon really spark.

For me it can go either way. I might think of a funny word or saying then have to figure out if a picture would be appropiate. Or I can come across a photo and have to think of something good to go along with it, when I can't think of something clever I just keep the pics as is. lol

I usually go for the image first. If I find something to say, I will. If not, then the picture often can speak a 1000 words, to use an old cliche.

I do both, depending on whether I hear a phrase first, or see a scene first.

I rarely have text in mind for icons because I'm not good at thinking of clever things to say. Sometimes, though, song lyrics will strike me in a certain way and I'll make an icon with that in mind and then add the text. About 99% of the time, it ends up sucking because it doesn't come off the way I meant. Sometimes it does, though.

I mostly make icons without text. The text for one of my best icons was suggested by someone else because I'm just not that clever. *g*
