You Dog

It had finally happened. Carter was having a shower. A baby shower, to be exact, and she'd invited most everyone she knew to her house for the party. It was a remarkable event, and there was no way that Jack could figure out how to avoid it. Frou frou showers...oye. Wasn't that something only women went to? What was the point of inviting a tough Air Force man like him to a party sure to be filled with squeeling scientists and women?

"Sir?"

Jack blinked and shook his head in a fractional shake. He was back in reality now.

"Sir? Can you come?" Carter, all earnest and blinking those big baby blues. He glanced to her middle involuntarily.

"Sure Carter. Yeah, I'll be there. Wouldn't miss it for the world. Okay, I might have to miss it if there's an emergency OFF world, but you get what I mean."

She smiled that winning smile of hers - seriously, on one planet, she'd won some sort of fraggin award for that smile. All those guys...strange planet that one was, so early in their career on SG-1. They'd waited on her hand and foot. She came back from that mission trying hard not to giggle through the report to Hammond. He had to admit he'd had a hard time keeping a straight face during that one. Teal'c's eyebrow got a great workout. Come to think of it, Daniel had quite the time on that planet also.

Carter nodded at him, still smiling, and gave a little wave as she bounced down the corridor to the next invitee's office. Jack grinned to himself as he remembered Makepeace's mission to that same planet as he accompanied the lawyers for the bargain part of the process. He heard the stolid, grim Marine beat the women off with a stick. Yeah, SG-1 wasn't the only team to whitewash some of the events they'd been through off-world.

His happy mood went into a sudden dive with the thought of never having adventures like that again.

There was a knock on his office door. What used to be Hammond's office door. God, he missed that man. A true gentleman, and fine officer. He reminded himself to give George a call when he got home.

"Come on in!" he said. He'd seen who it was through the etched glass window, so it was no surprise when Daniel snuck into his office. Snuck or slunk, take your pick, thought Jack. Tip-toed was more precise. With a furtive glance behind him, and toward the briefing room.

With a sigh of relief, Daniel humphed down onto the chair opposite Jack's desk. He squinched into the seat, lowering his profile.

Jack stared at him expentantly.

Daniel sighed. "Sam. Baby shower."

"You're delaying the inevitable, Daniel. Think of it as a ritual of the female of the species, an anthropological event worthy of study and observation. And hey, afterward, we can go have a six pack and laugh about it. Out of Carter's hearing, of course."

Daniel's version of Carter's blue eyes caught his own. What was it with big blue eyes setting him awash into places out of his depth?

"Sounds good to me. The beer part. And no, I won't avoid her for long. But there's something else I wanted to talk to you about."

Jack did his little shake nod, his nonverbal "What?" he did whenever he wanted more explanation.

"This new General coming in."

"Yeah...?" Jack glanced at the paperwork about the new General sitting on his desk right in front of him.

"You're giving your approval for him, aren't you? That's the way it works."

"That's right, although I'm not the only one who gives the guy a pass."

"With you leaving, Teal'c wants to head back and help lead the Jaffa. It's pretty important he does that. We don't want the Jaffa to end up as an adversary."

"Course not."

Daniel slipped a peice of paper onto Jack's desk, covering the new General's paperwork.

Jack scrutinized the words for a moment. "You want to leave SG-1?"

"But stay here."

"To do more research."

"I haven't had a chance to do that for years. You know that. Do some in depth study of the cultures we've discovered. Figure out some of the puzzles I haven't had time to piece together. But I'd still like to go through the Stargate."

"Consultant."

"Yes, that's right." Daniel relaxed in his chair. He'd thought this might be one of the easiest requests he'd ever given Jack. After all, he was asking to be taken off of a front line team, and removed from direct action.

No, it's NOT finished, and for the life of me, I can't remember off-hand what the hell I was planning with this! Ah well. (I found it buried in my PDA)
