SGU premiered last night, and I would have completely not known if I hadn't gone onto LJ (here) and realized it was broadcasting.

Lucky me. I recorded it for my husband and watched the first 15 minutes or so before (OMG!) turning the television off.  About the neatest thing about it during that 15 minutes was the hurtling cast members/characters smashing onto the floor of an unknown location.  At one point the Guy sat down with me and commented during a scene with Jack O'Neill in it--I don't even know if the Guy realized who that was--or maybe the one up on the Hammond, that he wished they'd stop with the bumpy-camera movement.

Who directed this? Cooper? He seems to love "cutting edge" camera work.

Anyway, I have no idea if I like or dislike this show, but really, I'm pretty much out of this franchise. I think. Unless they give me some really really good fodder for mocking, and you know they will. I'm just not sure SGUSTFU is worth it.

I've been done with the franchise for a while. I won't watch this and I'm not really interested in general. I'll just hold onto the stuff I enjoyed.

I'll tell you what show has *really* hooked me--Fringe! I'm totally surprised, but maybe I shouldn't be, since I did like the X-Files years ago.

I like the leads, and the supporting actors, and the story moves along and even though I missed the first season and some of the second season (tho I don't know how much of it), it feels "complete". That's what my mind is coming up with. It feels slightly like that SciFi miniseries where there were Objects from a Hotel Room that was caught outside of time (what was it called?) and some other vibes. And I'm ALL for parallel universe stories.

It helps that the male lead reminds me of one of the actors that was on Sarah Connor Chronicles and recently guested on Smallville as a cybernetic villian. And J.J. Abrams is a producer.

Anyhow. I like Fringe now, for sure.

LOL, That's funny. I quit Fringe. I tried it and tried it and tried it, and I just couldn't get into it. I liked the stories, but I only liked Walter. The other characters I just couldn't warm up to :(

The Lost Room was the miniseries.

I've heard through the grapevine that Fringe really picked up this season, and I've watched only two shows at this point. I can understand not getting into the characters-the woman FBI agent is very 'cool' and plays her emotions close to the vest, not unlike many male portrayals of FBI agents.

Ah! The Lost Room! That was it! So much potential.

I hear it picked up sometime after I quit. When it started out, it was kinda random and not very focused, and the characters were tough to relate to. And it was crazy gory and I'm not a gore fan.

I may eventually catch it on hulu or something, if it's still around, but I can't watch it on air if I wanted to. It plays same time as Supernatural.

And honestly? My disinterest didn't have much to do with Olivia playing it "cool." I appreciated that. I just couldn't relate to the characters very well.

The Lost Room had amazing potential *sigh* That had the worst ending I've seen in a LONG time.

But...SPN has gore, too?

Fringe is 10x worse with the gore. Maybe they've changed it these days. But it's one of the reasons why I quit.

I know a few people who watched who quit because of the gore. It was really prevalent and pointed at the beginning of S1.

But that's me. I'm sure it doesn't bother a lot of people.

I dislike the gore of Fringe, too. I never liked it on SPN either, though. I close my eyes or cover my eyes or look away. I actually like the characters on this show, though. John Noble is just hilarious to watch. I also really like the main female character. I'm a long-time Joshua Jackson fan, too, and he's the only reason I stuck with it. Otherwise the gore might have scared me away or I might have become bored with the show early in the first season, and I wouldn't have ended up hooked on the show. *g*

I liked season 1 a lot, but in season 2, they are giving Peter (the son, Joshua Jackson) more to do--a more active role. I think that's probably going to be a change for the better. I hope it is. We'll see.

I think I've seen oh...one? two maybe? comments that were positive the rest were all "OMGMEH!" about the premiere. Personally, I wouldn't touch the show if someone paid me.

I have real reservations about that "body-swap" communication device being used with any regularity. I'm sure the SG producers noted that in every Sci Fi show (ie, Star Trek) that tried to cut their crews off from Earth, it didn't last long--even on DS9 adoreadoreadore it seemed the very long distance from DS9 to earth shortened tremendously, and the Enterprise with Picard spent hardly any time out on a frontier exploring, and Voyager...won't even talk about that. Ugh.

I got a good impression of the Young Computer Gaming Genius in the first 15 minutes. I don't think they miscast there. The actor seems quite likable, really. Don't know about any of the others. It's a miracle the producers were able to acquire decent actors to begin with, but the writing will tell. Frankly, the writers of the original 1950s Lassie could write better harder-edged, character driven stories with a dog who could talk to humans in dog-language.

Other than that? Nada. Maybe I'll watch the whole thing through, but honestly, I want to spend my time doing other stuff. Like watch Fringe, or scrapbook, or do anything else. BSG got away (almost) with gratuitous sex scenes because the REST of the writing and acting was so freaking fantastic. (yes, I do like that show a lot)

::nods:: To me, any show that equates rape with entertainment gets a big fat NOT ON YOUR LIFE in regards to watching. And really, we already know that these writers do NOT do "edgy" or "well written" stories very...well, WELL. That to them, having a running theme of morally ambiguous sex in other people's bodies, is "edgy" is just proof that they haven't a CLUE as to what makes really GOOD TV. That's not to say they won't get the ratings cause there are a LOT of people out there that think being a TV show means they don't have to be held accountable for their content and that rape really IS entertaining and half naked women, lesbians and lots of gratuitous sex are of course going to draw that 18-35 male demographic in like flies to honey. That still doesn't mean the show is GOOD.

The geeky kid was in something else and I like the actor but not enough to watch. RDA and Michael Shanks, according to one of the actors may make regular guest appearances and as much as I LOVELOVELOVE RDA, not even he could get me to watch this.

Yeah, that's the thing right? I mean, its one thing if the writing is REALLY good and you can get away with some things you can't when the writing isn't up to par but the Stargate writers have NEVER EVER EVER reached the heights other shows hit and I don't think this is going to be any different.

I was done with the franchise at about season 9 of SG-1, when I realized the writers/producers were never going to change, and that they couldn't be trusted to do anything except stick it to the fans they decided didn't "get" their vision.

I couldn't even watch Atlantis, despite squeeing from friends. I sure as hell am not going to watch this one, where "body-swapping" causes involuntary rape, and is greeted with chuckles and manly ribbing. It sounds even worse than the cartoon!

I wonder how long they'll make it last.

From what I'm hearing, the ratings in that time slot for SGUSTFU were even worse than Flash Gordon (remember that turkey?).

Typically, shows with low ratings on SciFi tend to get cancelled. Like Dresden Files. (which, of course, if it had survived, the producers might have added Claudia Black in a similar Vala character, and I would have stopped watching anyhow)
