Did anyone on my flist hear about this, and yet not *say* anything?  A 24 year old guy was found dead under a bridge in Puerto Rico (the articles do not say what he died from, that I recall). His mother, who said his final wish was to be present at his own funeral/wake, had him embalmed and propped up against a corner of her living room (behind the coffin, full of flowers) for THREE DAYS!

Is this just not one of the creepiest things you've heard of?

Through the Victorian era, funerals were traditionally held in the home, where the body of the loved one would be laid out in the parlor for visitors to come and see for one last time. Then the funeral industry came along and changed all that (and turned death into a billion-dollar business in the process). However, in other countries/cultures, the old tradition of a loved one lying in state in the home is still commonplace. I don't think it's creepy at all. It strikes me as incredibly touching. I don't think I'd have the strength.

The only oddity here is that he wanted to be standing upright instead of lying in a coffin ... which is certainly different!

FYI, most state and royal funerals last several days, as do many private ones - especially in certain cultures. The queen mother lay in state for three days in 2002, so that citizens could file past her casket and pay their last respects.

Here's an article you might find interesting: http://commongroundmag.com/2007/04/homefuneral0704.html

BTW, apologies if you knew all that already -- which you probably did!
