Duma Key (SPOILERS)
I got my copy of Duma Key (by Stephen King, who else?) a few days ago from the Science Fiction Book Club, and finally started reading it two days ago. So far, so good. The main character has gotten through the trauma of having his arm cut off and his marriage ruined by an accident. There's something of The Dead Zone here, with the impetus being a limb removed, and some creepy stuff going on (on a very very low key) in the background. Just tiny hints.
King's real talent is his character building. He takes you into his characters, their lives and their hurts and their fears and loves, and makes you sympathize with them - even if they aren't the type of person you'd want to be within ten feet of in real life.
At this point in the book (part two) the real plot is finally starting to move, now that all the gears are in place, large and small. The scene is set.
After I read the article about "Do Civilizations Really Collapse" in Archeology Magazine, I'm going to read a few chapters of my new SK book. This may sound extremely morbid, but when Stephen King finally leaves this mortal coil I'm going to be one hell of an upset reader. I think writers go to a special heaven. I think storytellers all go to a special heaven. They're the ones who truly interpret our reality. The writers, the thinkers, the storytellers. You know the ones.
Anyhow. Yay! New SK book!
